Required CE Hours for Renewal
- Property & Casualty
24 hours per license term (license terms are 2 years).
- Life Only Agents and/or Accident and Health Agents
24 hours for each two-year license period
- Personal Lines
24 hours per license term (license terms are 2 years).
- Limited Lines Auto
20 hours per license term (license terms are 2 years).
- Ethics Requirement
All resident Property & Casualty and Life agents must complete 3 hours of approved Ethics each renewal period.
All resident Personal Lines and Limited Lines Auto agents must complete 3 hours of approved Ethics each renewal period.
(These hours are part of, and not in addition to, the continuing education requirement.)
- Annuities (this applies to Resident and Non Resident Agents)
An approved 8 hour Annuity Training course must be completed prior to soliciting the sale of any annuity products.
An approved 4 hour Annuity Training Refresher course is required every renewal period thereafter.
(These hours are part of, and not in addition to, the continuing education requirement.)
- Long-Term Care (this applies to Resident and Non Resident Agents)
Requirements are based on your overall CE requirements:
An approved 8 hour Long-Term Care course must be completed once during each 12 month period for the first four years that they are licensed in order to sell Long-Term Care policies.
Beginning in the fifth year that they are licensed, 8 hours of LTC CE must be completed every two-year license term (renewal).

- Homeowner Valuation Course
Every Property and/or Casualty broker-agent and Personal Lines broker-agent licensee must complete a 3
hour approved Homeowners Valuation Course. This course is only required to be taken once.
- Flood Insurance Requirement
All California licensed agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must take an approved 3 hour Flood Insurance course.
(These hours are part of, and not in addition to, the continuing education requirement.)
- Dual License Holders
The CE requirement goes to the individual, not to each license held. The CE requirement can be met by taking courses approved for either license type.
Note: 1/1/2011 the Fire and Casualty broker-agent was replaced with the Property and Casualty broker-agent or the option to obtain a Property only broker-agent or Casualty only broker-agent license.
How CE Hours are Reported by PLT
- In California, we report to the DOI every day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.
License Renewal/CE Compliance Date
- Property & Casualty or Life
Last day of the month the license was issued in every 2 years
- Personal Lines
Every 2 years on December 31st.
- Annuities (see above)
- Long Term Care (see above)
- Agents who are 70 years of age or older and have maintained their license for 30 continuous years as a licensee in good standing in the State of California.
Course Type Approved for CE Credit
- Online courses
- Independent self-study
- Classroom study
Carryover CE Hours Requirement
- A maximum of 30 CE hours obtained only in the second half of a renewal period may be carried over to the next renewal for Life or Fire & Casualty brokers/agents licensed four years or more.
Excess hours completed in the second half of the renewal period may be carried over to the next renewal period. For the majority of licenses this is a maximum of 24 hours.
- Courses may be taken more than once in each renewal period. A course subject can be repeated within each renewal providing if each course has a different course number. A course with the same course number can only be completed in different renewal periods.
